Bleeding in the First Trimester

Spotting vs. Concern

Light spotting in the first trimester can be normal, especially after a vaginal exam, ultrasound, or intercourse. Still, it’s important to pay attention to the type and amount of bleeding. Here’s what to watch for—and when to call our office for further guidance.

  • Spotting after intercourse, vaginal exam or vaginal ultrasound is common and can be monitored as long as it’s not getting heavier.
  • Bleeding with cramping can be a warning sign of miscarriage, call the office.
  • If you have any bleeding or spotting and you know your blood type is Rh negative, please call the office. You may require a shot.

If you are pregnant and bleeding, regardless of the amount, please feel free to call our nurse line for further assistance.
