Signs of Labor

Knowing When It’s Time

As your due date approaches, it’s important to recognize the signs that labor may be starting. While every labor is different, consistent contractions, changes in movement, or a sudden gush of fluid are key indicators. Here’s what to watch for—and when to call your provider or head to the hospital.

  • Contractions become progressively stronger and closer together
  • The contractions occur regularly about every 5 minutes for a duration of more than 2 hours
  • The contractions are felt throughout the abdomen, not just at the top of the uterus
  • The contractions do not decrease with rest or hydration
  • Bleeding, a gush of fluid (like your water broke) or a decrease in the baby’s movements should also prompt an immediate call to the office or hospital evaluation
